WHO SAID IT
The quote was a clue in a recent New York Times crossword puzzle and asked; “ ho said that.?” I didn’t know the answer and had to look it up. It was: “The Lorax.”
That brought a smile to my face. Who doesn’t (still) love Dr. Seuss? And the Lorax?
Theodor Seuss Geisel wrote The Lorax in 1971 in response to his own growing concerns about pollution and the destruction of forests. In the story, a little girl finds a shell on the beach and throws it back into the ocean. She cared enough to do one thing. One small thing. To make it better for all of us.
The quote is timely. It encourages each of us to care enough about something to do something. If one single shell returned to the vast sea makes it better, then surely, we can also do something. No matter how small.
Back to crossword puzzles where this all started. In yesterday’s Wall Street Journal puzzle, the first across clue was: “Word to a yoga instructor.” The answer is: “Namaste.” The word, like the quote, is, just that much more timely today than it was yesterday. Alas.
