SOAPS

Ah, yes.  Those delicious, sappy, gooey afternoon television shows of old.  I’m assuming they’re no more.  Alas. And alack.

I firmly believe that my children are alive and well today due in large part to “The Guiding Light.” There were three of them. The children that is, under the age of three. Things did not run smoothly.  But, happily, I knew in my heart and my mind that I could tune in to “The Guiding Light” every afternoon and let those characters take me away.  To another world.  To another life. Just like the Calgon people promised they could do but never really did so.

The characters of The Guiding Light, especially Riva and Josh, were my besties.  I’d watch as they fought like cats and dogs, kissed, made up and started all over again.  It was drama and angst but with the promise of resolution.

Many of the evening shows look a lot like “prime time” soaps.  It’s easy to your get daily dose of drama and angst that way.

But if the soaps don’t float your boat, you can always go straight-away to the drama and angst of our own world by simply watching the national news.
