SERENA, THEO, AND THE KNICKS

(Symbols for outstanding writing, athleticism and virtue)

The above are heroes.  Each and every one of them.

Serena lost her singles game at Wimbledon earlier this week.  We’re accustomed to seeing Serena win.  So is she.  But, In losing that match, she unwittingly stepped into “heroine” territory. She gave the game her all and when it was over, her sorrow and grace were evident.  But, she handled it all with grace and style.  She also kept the Wimbledon doors open for her young competitor, who should have a long and notable tennis career ahead.  In my view, Serena earned a two rungs in the hero ladder.

Then there’s Theo. If you don’t know “Theo,” please acquaint yourself through the book, titled Theo of Golden, by Allen Levi. It’s been number one on the NYT best seller list for several weeks now.  Theo is a quiet hero.  A lovely, mild-mannered gentleman who “listens” instead of “talks.” In the book, Theo quietly finds the innate “heroism” in everyone he gets to know.  His ability to “reward” each for their little known heroic deeds comes as a surprise to each. Just as he planned it. Unsung hero that he is, after all.

Then there are those Knicks. They know what to do and how to do it.  Again. And again. And we thank them for that. They give us cause for celebration.

It’s “safe” to admire our heroes.  We can applaud them, enjoy them and honor them with no strings or political overtones attached.. How sweet it is.
