OH, HAPPY DAYS

We have a little sign at the entrance of our community which informs us of upcoming events in the ‘hood.

Just this last week, we were told that the annual chili cook-off event was coming up. And very soon. It’s to be held, as always, on the promenade of the Yacht Club.  Cooks and tasters alike are welcome to attend and enjoy that most delicious of comfort foods.  Chili!

In the past, we’ve always come home with full tummies, a renewed sense of community and the knowledge that we don’t have to cook dinner that evening.

BUT WAIT!

That welcome sign at the entrance today announced that the chili cookout has been CANCELLED!

Apparently, there are too many tasters and not enough cooks.

As a result, I won’t be eating ANY chili this weekend. Not even so much as a nibble.

I really, really like chili, even though these days chili doesn’t necessarily reciprocate in a “friendly” fashion.  There’s nothing’s good about that.

More importantly, the cancellation of the cook-off is a sad thing.  It tells us we’re too busy to cook a little food, share it with others, maybe even sip a beer or two. Together.

That’s probably not going to change any time soon.  And, while I’m content to be “chili-less” this weekend, I regret not having the opportunity to see old friends and meet new ones.  I was looking forward to that.

Alas.  The times, they are a-changin.’  And I, for one, regret that.
