AMAZINGLY AND REMARKABLY
......every single book from our old bookshelves slipped readily and easily into our new ones. Nary a book was left over nor was there an empty space for so much as one more. I took this as a very positive sign.
I’ve been happily browsing through the new shelves since we’ve moved here. They’re more accessible than the old ones and the books are, of course, my old buddies.
In the process, I came across a book I was given many years ago. It’s titled: “When I Am An Old Woman, I Shall Wear Purple.” I pulled it down and started leafing through it. Back to front, as I always do. I quickly became deeply discouraged and had to stop. I neither wanted nor needed to read about, look at or be reminded of my frailties. Present or potential. Current or yet to come.
I put the book down, went to the mirror, put a big glob of gel into my spiky hair, smeared some bright orange lipstick on my lips and pulled on a jazzy pair of multi-colored tights. Out of pure spite, I threw on a purple turtleneck.
So there! I said to myself. I don’t need to think like that, be like that or look like that. I’ll do my own thing in my own way and in my own time, thank you very much. So out went that book! Good riddance, indeed!
Now there’s a space in our shelves for a much more positive book! I’ve recently seen a book entitled “The Courage to Be Disliked.” Hmmmmm..
